Clayton

Immediately west of the City of Saint Louis, the City of Clayton, Missouri combines a lively downtown with thriving residential neighborhoods. It’s a unique, upscale suburban community with an inner-ring urban vibe. While land use in Clayton is mostly dedicated to residential or park use, the city’s Central Business District is home to some of the area’s priciest office space. Although the residential population is a modest 16,000, the daytime work population swells to more than 50,000. In addition, Clayton offers extensive retail space that is home to both national chains and to many boutique-style local merchants.

Although it is still grounded in its own historic roots and Midwestern flavor, many visitors will find Clayton familiar in comparison to Stamford, CT; Irving, TX; Century City, CA; Evanston, IL; McLean, VA; and similar upscale suburban enclaves.

Clayton, Missouri, housing options include a mix of stately single-family homes and luxury condos. Most of the homes were built in the early 1920’s to the mid 1950’s, although newer in-fill construction is sprinkled across the city. Many of the newer homes are located just North of Downtown Clayton in neighborhoods that offer the opportunity to tear down a more modest aging home, but this trend has spread and now reflects individual home buyers’ neighborhood preferences. The price range for real estate in Clayton varies from $400,000 – $3M+ for single family homes. Clayton also offers a wide array of condominium choices: from the 1920’s walk-up condominiums in the DeMun and Moorlands neighborhoods to the newer luxury condominium towers in downtown Clayton, such at The Plaza, The Crescent, Maryland Walk, and Clayton Park Place.

Clayton offers an easy lifestyle with superior city support services: the trash men pick up from your back yard (and your city council rep might be your next door neighbor!). As a central, near-Western suburb, the commute to most employers can be achieved within 15-20 minutes.

Clayton is also known for its award-winning public school system, which is considered – by many – as an excellent alternative to private prep. Clayton is also home to several prestigious educational institutions, including Washington University, Fontbonne University and Concordia Seminary. Two of the area’s most distinguished private elementary schools are also located in Clayton: The Forsyth School and Wilson School.
